Abstract Lake Vorsee, a glacially formed small and shallow eutrophic lake in Southern Germany, has a catchment area where 137Cs is to a large extent reversibly bound to organic matter. Even decades after the 137Cs fallout considerable amounts of 137Cs are still transported from the catchment area into the lake, and the activity concentration in water and the transfer into water plants and fish is relatively high compared with other lakes.
In order to describe the distribution and transport of 137Cs in the lake ecosystem, the following 137Cs measurements have been performed: inventory and vertical distribution in the soil of the catchment area; activity concentration in lake water (1987-2016) and suspended matter; vertical distribution in sediment profiles at different locations in the lake; concentration in different fish species (1987-2016) and in water plants.
Also the concentration of ions (NH4+ and K+; competing with 137Cs for binding places) in lake water and pore water of sediments as well as the portion of exchangeable 137Cs activity in the sediments have been determined.
Time dependencies of activity concentration in water, suspended matter, and different fish species will be described and correlations between different influencing quantities will be discussed. The establishment of a 137Cs inventory flow analysis quantifies the relative importance of the different compartments of this eutrophic lake ecosystem with time.
