This new course is based on the book “Bringing Up The Boss”, which I discovered reading the “business@wharton” Wharton Business School newsletter.

The book is very readable and offers a range of progressive and practical solutions to handling the various people issues that regularly crop up in organisations ……. I wish the people I had worked for in the past had used them!

A podcast discussion with the author is here https://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/new-managers-need-help/ a .pdf summary about the book and author here https://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/new-managers-need-help/

As a participant, you will be requested to get to know a chapter (or two) of the book as preparation.  During the class there will be “workshop style” discussions, some exercises and of course “role-plays”  to practice the ideas/techniques in a safe, and hopefully, fun way.

Your benefits from taking the course will be threefold:

  • When interviewing for a new job you will have a good basis for sounding out your future boss!
  • As an employee/team member you can use the skills/techniques when interacting with colleagues and management
  • And when you are a manager you’ll know how to give effective feedback, how to motivate your team members, and how to hire and fire well, among many other critical management skills. You’ll also learn what it means to manage yourself in this new role, and how to navigate the often awkward and sometimes challenging situations that arise in this new position.

75% attendance and successful completion of an end of semester test required to qualify for course credits
