Kurzkommentar

This course explains along the “project life cycle” how to initiate, plan, organize, execute and successfully finalize international projects. Along each project phase the specific challenges due to different cultural background, language, multiple time zones, remote locations etc. are discussed.

Inhalt

Non-recurring, temporary and interdisciplinary tasks frequently are performed by project teams, as the line- organization usually is optimized to do routine work. Due to internationalization, in many companies R&D-, organizational- or investment-projects reach across national or cultural borders. Different cultural background, multiple time zones, locations far away etc. require special skills of team members, team leaders and stakeholders.

This course explains along the “project life cycle” how to initiate, plan, structure, execute and successfully finalize projects. Along each project phase the specifics of international projects are going to be discussed. It concentrates on “classical” project management, but “agile” methods are touched also.

In the final chapter “human factor” we discuss the necessary competences for leaders of international projects as well as communication and cooperation in the international context.

Lerninhalte

The students are able to distinguish between „routine tasks“ and „projects“ and are able to prepare project proposals ready for release. The model of „project life cycle“ and the differences between “classic project management” and „agile project management” are understood.

The students know how to structure project tasks and to plan time, resources and costs. They are able to define reasonable milestones, measure the project progress, detect deviations and initiate corrective actions if necessary.

Depending on the regional and cultural situation an appropriate organizational form of the project can be chosen. Roles and responsibilities of team members are understood. The influence of cultural differences on project management is appreciated. The students are able to handle the challenges of cultural differences, long distances and different time zones on leadership, motivation, communication and decision processes and understand the core competencies to be acquired by a future manager of international projects.
