The chances are your next step after RWU will be to work for an organisation - this course will give you a good basis on what to look for when deciding on which job to take, how to interact succesfullly with your own manager, and how to make a confident start when that promotion comes!

Moving from Team Member to Manager is a big step and can be very challenging! This course is a taster of what’s involved when moving up and provides a framework of activites and techniques that will help you and your colleagues create results.

The content is based on the book “Bringing Up The Boss”, which I discovered reading the “business@wharton” Wharton Business School newsletter.

The book is very readable and offers a range of progressive and practical solutions to handling the various people issues that regularly crop up in organisations ……. I wish the people I had worked for in the past had used them!

A podcast discussion with the author and summary about the book and author is here https://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/new-managers-need-help/ .

As a participant, you will get to know a chapter (or two) of the book as preparation.  During the class there will be “workshop style” discussions, some exercises and of course “role-plays”  to practice the ideas/techniques in a safe, and fun way.

Your benefits from taking the course will be threefold:

  • When interviewing for a new job you will have a good basis for sounding out your future boss!
  • As an employee/team member you can use the skills/techniques when interacting with colleagues and management
  • And when you are a manager you’ll know how to give effective feedback, how to motivate your team members, and how to hire and fire well, among many other critical management skills. You’ll also learn what it means to manage yourself in this new role, and how to navigate the often awkward and sometimes challenging situations that arise in this new position.

Student comments about the course:

“If I remember just half of all the useful tips, I will definitely have a head start once I become a manager”.

“I think this course helped me a lot in terms of getting to know what managing looks like in the real world. It was interesting to see that managing not only means managing a team but also individuals and yourself”

“The book was very interesting and written in a way that was fun to read”.

…… the book is a good guide to become a good manager, however it isn’t enough to practice real life. Therefore we made lots of role-plays ….. and I have learned to become a good manager ….”
