Practical IT Security (PSEC) is a course to gain practical knowledge in advanced security topics and at the same time improve soft-skills as an IT security professional. It prepares participation at a (international) capture-the-flag contest as a RWU team. Topics are prepared and trained in a peer-to-pear teaching approach applying Active Learning didactics. Examples for possible topics are: Windows Security and Mimikatz, Kali Linux, Network Scanning, Rust Programming, WiFi Security, Binary Reverse Engineering, and Attacking Large Language Models. The lecture is rounded off by guest presentations of multiple security experts from companies based throughout Germany, giving insights into their daily way of working. |

At completion of the course, you will:
- have deep knowledge of one security topic including practical (tool) application
- have broad knowledge in multiple other security topics in theory and practice
- have basic didactic skills in preparation and presentation of a relevant security topic
- be able to transfer acquired knowledge by training others on a relevant security topic
- (be able to participate at a capture-the-flag contest)

Weighted grading of student's teaching performance.
Students in turn prepare exercises in a peer-learning mode. For this, the presenter needs an audience. Therefore: Binding participation as soon as topics are assigned.
Confirmed assignment to a topic counts as start of the exam in the sense of § 20 (1) Master SPO and you will be graded ‘failed’ if dropping out afterwards. |

- Advanced theoretical and hands-on expertise in key IT-Security domains.
- Using an Active Learning and peer-to-peer approach, students independently design, present, and facilitate lab exercises for a selected security topic while setting up realistic sandbox environments.
- Industry guest lectures offer practical operational context.
- Graduates acquire deep technical specialization, broad knowledge across security disciplines, fundamental didactic skill, and preparation for Capture-The-Flag (CTF) competitions.
