The course puts you on the right track to develop from a good B2 communicator to a C1 speaker. The secrets to success are grammar, vocabulary, and lots of practice to improve your oral and aural skills, using contemporary content and even role-playing. Let’s hear it from Duncan himself: “Do the following grammatical clauses pique your interest? Using future perfect simple for assumptions about the present; passive reporting clauses with can; and non-defining relative clauses with whose. All of the above are what makes the difference between a good B2 communicator and a C1 speaker.

However, it’s not all about Grammar: The B2/C1 course will aim to improve all aspects of English language communication, with an emphasis on developing your oral/aural skills, particularly in an academic and work setting. Enjoyable learning situations are among my highest priorities. When you have given up time from your desk, attending a language course (regularly) should be stimulating and engaging, and even sometimes fun! It is perversely one of the most effective ways of learning.

Content: Relevant contemporary content is better than anything else when learning a language. We will use upto-date newsworthy texts on subjects that are interesting in our modern-day lives e.g. TED talks; Youtube videos; newspaper articles, among others.

Vocabulary: Vocab can be difficult in English, but it can also be liberating. There is so much available, and quite a lot of it does not require to be deployed in a specific “Satzaufbau”. But there are useful things to learn in class e.g.: frequent words in English with multiple meanings, phrases and collocations, phrasal verbs, idioms, and word families. There is only one pathway to C1 once the Grammar has been learnt: vocab, vocab, and more vocab."
